The Defenders need quite a bit of help if you want a solid team build with mostly Defenders characters. In this article we will look over the faction and see what it may hope in getting in the Marvel Legacy VS2PCG set slated for March.
I have gone over all of the Defenders faction cards and found quite a few weak gaps that could be improved upon. For a list of Defenders articles you can find them HERE.
Let's face it, Daredevil needs a lot to become even casually competitive. Honestly, he just needs a reprint of his level 1 card to make him level up super quickly consistently. Even then I don't think he would be super competitive but at his current state he is unplayable.
Other than extending tournament round time limits, Dr. Strange doesn't want much at all. Perhaps better Supporting Characters to allow his decks to stay a little more on team but that is more of nit-picking. Perhaps him and Ghost Rider MC could both use a character similar to Doctor Octopus on team.
While Ghost Rider's level up condition isn't as horrible as Daredevil's level up condition, it is still pretty bad. I have a Ghost Rider deck with a bit of synergy that could turn into a pretty good deck if it had another couple of supporting characters to help the build. He needs at least one character that makes your opponent deal with it before Ghost Rider and letting it sit there won't be a good idea for your opponent. A character similar to Doctor Octopus but on team.
The Deck and synergy that I have for my Ghost Rider deck revolve around Deacklok and Brother Dillon. If there was a third effect similar to them and an additional outlet other than Ghost Rider SC and Moon Knight, the deck might have legs, though it would still need something to strengthen his level up condition as mentioned previously. Perhaps another large finisher in the deck would help as well.
Luke Cage is pretty set and doesn't want much either. Perhaps a strong character in the multi-health character curve for Defenders to make a heavier Defenders based deck possible, but that seems like something all of the Defenders MCs desire as the supporting characters are not that synergistic.
It is very hard to analyze and put a finger on what the curve wants for this faction as it feels to me pretty weak all over and is lacking in several spots. The curve needs to support leveling its characters up and an overall synergy which is doesn't have. You have something like Hellcat which looks pretty aggressive yet it has no home with any of the faction MCs or really any other faction MCs because it doesn't have a solid aggressive curve behind it. There is no draw to play the card at all because of the support around it is off in different places with different ideas.
I think Dagger and Cloak combined is a fun little combo but it can be shut off by another Dagger and it doesn't have any other support other than Viper. That strategy doesn't really mix with any other defenders cards either. There isn't enough synergy there and it isn't strong enough to matter.
Deathlok has potential in a deck like my Ghost Rider deck however it doesn't have any other on team support other than Moon Knight. And it by itself is a mediocre card that doesn't push synergy within the faction.
Nighthawk seems like it could be good if it had a nice little combo with it or more aggressive stats. Atlas, it doesn't. Vision feels like a misfit toy because Ghost Rider MC and Luke Cage MC have a lot going on for their resources Daredevil MC is unplayable and Dr. Strange wants to be greedy with . Now Vision could be played with different factions, except he frankly isn't powerful enough and is too resource intensive for a card to splash.
MC Iron Fist: With the show coming out soon I don't think Upper Deck will skip over this, then again they skipped over Jessica Jones previously.
Jessica Jones: With the show being popular, they should really put her in there. It also could be a way to put the Leap keyword into a Marvel character.
