"I'm a blind lawyer with a history of incarceration and personal tragedy. What in that make-up makes you think I have a sense of humor?" - Matthew Murdock (Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 #587)
While he may not have a sense of humor or sight, he does bring justice on two fronts. Let's have a look at his main character in the VS2PCG.
Level up (3) "Protector of Hell's Kitchen": When Daredevil gets attacked, if he's protecting a character, Daredevil gains an XP.
The hardest thing about playing Daredevil Main Character is leveling him up. He has probably the hardest level up condition in the game. If your opponent can get rid of your back row characters first, then he won't be able to level up.
2/5/5 starting stats are not great given the fact that he doesn't have flying or ranged. Storm is a 2/5/5 with flying and quite arguably better abilities. Even when leveled up, Daredevil's stats are just okay at that point.
Uncanny Defense doesn't even help Daredevil MC because the trigger only happens once which is right as the attack is declared. Is this character destined to always be level 1? Xenomorph Ambusher can help him level if it isn't taken out by an out of combat stun, but I'm not sure it's enough.
Level 1 Power: The Man Without Fear - Combat : Daredevil strikes with double his ATK this combat.
Striking for double your attack is great. Shock to the System being a widely used plot twist in the meta makes this ability not as great.
With equipment and other pumps becoming available this character does get stronger but he still has to face the adversity of leveling up.
Level 2 Power: "Radar Sense" - Main : Enemy players must play with their hands revealed. An enemy player may play a during their Main Phase to end this effect.
Seeing your opponents hand in most card games gives a huge benefit. It enables mind games as well because if you attack something and you know what they have for defensive abilities, you can bluff them into saving or wasting things they might not have saved or wasted.
The same goes for when you are defending. You can plan better and get the most out of your cards by predicting your opponents moves better. Sometimes your opponent will be able to pay the or just not care if you can see their hand.
Most decks start off by figuring out how to level your character quickly and then more for a strategy to support around that concept. Your leveling with Daredevil is dependent on what your opponent does, what your opponent has and what things you have in your deck that will try to force your opponent to give you XP.
Even if you put Moonstone and Xenomorph Ambusher in your deck, that is only 8 cards that could help you level. With so many out of combat stuns out there now, those may not be enough. Other cards with camouflage could help but I'm not sure if it would even be enough.
I spoke to Ashley Knox about this briefly and Ashley said that building a deck focusing on leveling Daredevil up probably isn't the best approach with the current cardpool. Daredevil's second ability could be dead and not have that much effect on the game anyways. It definitely isn't game transforming. It doesn't extend the game or immediately impact the board in any way.
Ashley Knox is right in that aspect, Radar Sense could have no effect at all on the game. Daredevil's first ability has the potential to be pretty strong with equipment and other pumps. Is it really strong enough with a 2/5/5 base with no flying or range that is unlikely to level?
I wonder what it would be like if it were a little easier to level up Daredevil. Would reprinting his level 1 character card with an easier level up condition be worth it? Ghost Rider is hard to level up and play as well, but most people still consider Daredevil so bad that he is a tier below everyone. What do you all think? Leave a comment and let me know.
